WELCOME TO THE LIBERIS PRACTICE HOMEPAGE

Liberis Practice offers professional, highly qualified help to children and families experiencing emotional difficulties, family upheaval and life crises.

We can offer one-off consultations, in-depth assessments and extended therapy to children, parents, and families. Although we specialise in helping children and families, some of us also work with adults, both individuals and couples.

Who are we?

We are a group of experienced psychoanalytic psychotherapists with a shared training and professional ethos. We have all attended the internationally recognised Tavistock Clinic, having undergone an intensive training lasting at least seven years. We are all registered members of the relevant professional bodies in our field: the Association of Child Psychotherapists (“the ACP”) and the Tavistock Society of Psychotherapists (“the TSP”) or the British Psychoanalytic Council (“the BPC”).

What is psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy is often described as “the talking cure” and derives from the psychoanalytic tradition started by Sigmund Freud and developed with particular reference to children by his daughter, Anna Freud, and by Melanie Klein, John Bowlby, Donald Winnicott and many others.

Child psychotherapy proceeds from the premise that all children have complex emotional lives and that they can be helped to navigate the often difficult passages of childhood by being listened to, observed and talked to in a sympathetic and kindly, but unsentimental way. Above all, our tradition stresses that children and their troubles deserve to be taken seriously just as much as adults and their problems.

In our experience work with children is helped enormously by constructive engagement with the parents by regular meetings and reviews.

Psychotherapy differs from psychiatry, which deals with mental illness and whose practitioners are medically qualified. We do not prescribe medication, but where necessary we can refer clients to suitably qualified psychiatrists or other professionals.

How do we work?

We work closely with children and their families to form a better understanding of their problems, usually working through a three stage process of initial consultation, followed by detailed assessment and in some but not all cases by ongoing therapy over several months or longer.
